How to Calculate Landscaping Material

1

Pick your material

Choose mulch, topsoil, gravel, sand, or sod. The calculator switches between cubic yards for bulk materials and pallets for sod automatically.

2

Enter length & width

Measure the bed or area in feet and enter both dimensions. The tool multiplies them to find the square footage you need to cover.

3

Set the depth

For bulk materials, enter how deep you want the layer in inches — 2–3″ for mulch, 4–6″ for new soil. Sod skips this step.

4

Read your total & copy

Get cubic yards, bags, and pallets instantly. Add a price for a cost estimate, then copy the result into your order or a client quote.

Who Uses This Tool

Landscapers & Lawn Care Pros

Order the right amount of mulch, soil, and sod for every job, and bid accurately without over-buying or running short mid-install.

Hardscape & Garden Installers

Size gravel and sand bases to the right depth for paver patios, walkways, and planting beds before you pull a truck up to the supplier.

DIY Homeowners

Avoid over- or under-ordering on a weekend project. Know exactly how many bags or cubic yards to buy before heading to the garden center.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much mulch do I need?
Multiply the length and width of your bed in feet to get the square footage, then multiply by the depth in feet (for example, 3 inches is 0.25 feet) to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. This calculator does all of that for you — just enter your dimensions and depth, and pick Mulch as the material.
How many cubic yards are in a bag of mulch or soil?
Most bagged mulch and soil comes in 2 cubic foot bags, and there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard — so roughly 13.5 bags equal one cubic yard. Enter your bag size in the calculator and it tells you how many bags to buy. Bulk delivery by the yard is usually cheaper for larger jobs.
What depth should I use for mulch, soil, and gravel?
Mulch is typically applied 2–3 inches deep, fresh topsoil for a new bed or lawn 4–6 inches, and a gravel or sand base for pavers around 4 inches over a compacted sub-base. Deeper layers use proportionally more material, so set the depth to match your project.
How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?
A standard pallet of sod covers roughly 450 square feet, though it ranges from about 400 to 500 depending on the farm and whether the rolls are big or small. This calculator uses 450 sq ft per pallet and 10 sq ft per roll, then rounds up so you do not come up short.
Do I need to order extra material?
Yes. Order 5–10% more than the exact calculation to cover settling, irregular bed shapes, slopes, and waste. Sod and mulch in particular compress or get trimmed during install, so a small buffer keeps you from a second supplier trip in the middle of a job.
How do I calculate gravel or sand for a base?
Treat it like any bulk material: enter the length and width of the area and the depth of the base you want in inches. The calculator returns cubic feet and cubic yards. For compacted bases, gravel settles, so plan for slightly more than the loose volume the math shows.
Can I estimate the cost of my materials?
Yes. Enter your price per cubic yard for bulk materials (or price per pallet for sod) and the calculator multiplies it by the volume needed. Leave the price at zero to skip the cost line. Prices vary by region and supplier, so use a current quote for accuracy.
Is this calculator free and is my data saved?
Yes, the calculator is completely free with no signup required. Your inputs are saved locally in your browser so they persist between visits — nothing is uploaded to a server. Clearing your browser data will erase your saved values.
